Advice on RUC for dealers

The Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association (VIA) is advising dealers to swot up on road user charges (RUC) so they can better understand the scheme and explain how it works to customers.

The recommendation comes after the government announced the exemption for light electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) will no longer apply from April 1.

Malcolm Yorston, VIA’s technical support, says the Ministry of Transport has a detailed explanation of the RUC system on its website and he encourages members to access the information so they can have informed discussions with consumers.

“The recent announcement regarding the need for a RUC licence for EVs and PHEVs from April was probably not surprising news to VIA members,” adds Yorston, pictured.

“However, VIA members may be interested in a more in-depth explanation of the need for, and the methodology behind, the RUC regime. This could help you in conversations with customers about RUC.

“This information will be increasingly relevant for dealers and motorists in the future as the new government has indicated its intention to look at a shift from excise tax to RUC for all vehicles.”
