Action needed on old tyres
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and Australian Tyre Recyclers Association (ATRA) have made recommendations to governments on actions to manage waste tyres.
They are listed in a used-tyre regulations white paper, which aims to address market failures, progressively develop demand for recycled tyre products and provide a platform for a potential co-regulated scheme.
The FCAI’s chief executive, Tony Weber, says its members support actions to minimise waste and the development of a sustainable circular economy.
He adds progress is already being made with a passenger and commercial collection rate of around 98 per cent and a recovery rate of about 89 per cent.
“The FCAI holds the view there are opportunities to deliver better outcomes with strong stakeholder engagement, clear objectives and support of governments.”
Areas for a potential future scheme could include remote-area collection, stockpile removal and improved government procurement for used-tyre products.
