SUVs continue to strengthen in Australia's new vehicle market, with sales increasing 9.3 per cent last month compared to June 2017.

The SUV market continued to strengthen in June with sales totalling 56,162, an increase of 9.3 per cent or 4,769 units compared with the same period in 2017, according to the latest data released by VFACTS, Australia's motor industry's statistical service. 

Despite this, the Australian market for new vehicles slowed in June compared with the same period in 2017. New vehicle sales last month totalled 130,000, a decrease of 3,871 units or 2.9 per cent on June 2017. 

The passenger vehicle market showed a significant decline in June with 41,561 sales. This was down 9,085 units or 17.9 per cent over the same month last year. 

Light commercials and heavy commercials were relatively steady in June with a 0.3 per cent and 9.1 per cent increase over June 2017, respectively. 

The three top-selling vehicles during June were light commercial vehicles, with the Toyota Hilux leading the market ahead of the Ford Ranger and the Mitsubishi Triton third.

SUVs held a dominant 43.1 per cent share of the June market, with the passenger car share at 31.9 per cent, and light commercials at 21.8 per cent.

The small and medium segments were the main contributors to the growth in SUV sales during June. Small SUVs rose 32.2 per cent, and medium SUVs by 7.3 per cent.

Toyota was the market leader in June, leading by 10,702 vehicle sales, followed by Mazda and Hyundai.
