Lift in card spending

All retail categories recorded increased spending in August, including the motor vehicle industry, which helped lift overall retail spending to its largest monthly rise since March to 1.0 per cent.

When compared to July 2018, spending in the retail industries rose $56 million, or 1.0 per cent last month.

The motor vehicle industry recorded a growth of $1.1 million, or 0.6 per cent, to $176 million last month.

However, increased fuel spending was the main contributor to the overall lift in retail card spending, Stats NZ said today.

“Fuel prices rose in August compared with July, contributing to the lift in fuel spending,” retail statistics manager Sue Chapman said. “Fuel spending on electronic cards has generally risen over the last year.”
