Earthquake rocks Japan

Northern Osaka was rocked by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake at 7:58 am Monday and struck at a depth of about 10 km, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Monday’s earthquake resulted in many manufacturers suspending production.

Among manufacturers, Honda briefly suspended the production line at its Suzuki factory in Mie Prefecture and Mitsubishi temporarily suspended production at two manufacturing plants in Kyoto and Shiga.

Singaporean newspaper, Platts however reported that Osaka port, one of the country’s leading ports, was not affected by the earthquake.

There was no impact as yet on operations at Osaka following the strong earthquake that hit the western coast of Japan early on Monday morning, industry sources said.

"The impact on shipping is expected to be limited. I am not hearing of any vessel congestion at the port either," a shipbroker source said.
