Drop in used commercial sales

There were 937 used commercial vehicles sold last month, an 8.5 per cent decrease compared to January 2018 when 1,024 vehicles were registered. However, compared with December 2018, sales increased by 10.4 per cent and 88 units last month. 

Toyota topped the ladder on 399 units, a 1.2 per cent decrease compared to 404 in the same month last year for a market share of 42.6 per cent. Nissan came second with 206 units for an increase of 4.6 per cent compared to January 2018 for a market share of 20.5 per cent. Sales of Fords significantly increased by 93.3 per cent from 30 in January 2018 to 58 last month. 

Toyota’s Hiace remained the dominant model with a 31.6 per cent market share and sales of 296 last month. This was more than 200 ahead of the Nissan Caravan and Toyota’s Dyna, which recorded 66 and 38 sales respectively. 

Many regions around New Zealand saw drops in used commercial sales in January. However, areas that performed best when compared to the same month a year earlier were Invercargill – up 133.3 per cent from six in 2017 to 14 units last month. Palmerston and Gisborne rounded out the top three – up by 82.4 and 83.3 per cent respectively.
