Disposing automotive pyrotechnics

The Imported Motor Vehicle Association (VIA) have just announced that the NZ Defence Force will offer a nationwide pick-up service of automotive pyrotechnics.

Emergency flares occasionally make their way into New Zealand in vehicles imported from Japan. These are illegal and not permitted to be used in New Zealand, and must be removed from any vehicle they are found in and safely disposed of. The NZ Defence Force offers an authorised safe removal and disposal service, picking up flares and other undischarged automotive pyrotechnic devices (e.g. pyrotechnic seatbelt retractors and air-bag inflators) from compliance shops. NZDF personnel make regular trips around the country to pick up pyrotechnic devices, and will also advise on safe storage options until a scheduled pick-up can occur. NB: This service does not apply for devices under manufacturer recall (such as the Takata recall), as the NZDF considers the safe disposal of these to be the manufacturer’s responsibility.
