VW commits to EU fixes

Posted on 24 September, 2016

Volkswagen Group has pledged to fix all cars equipped with illegal defeat devices in Europe by late 2017, says Automotive News. The European Commission met with Volkswagen to ensure it is doing enough for customers affected by the emissions-cheating scandal. At a meeting with consumer Commissioner Vera Jourova, Volkswagen board member Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz committed to a plan to inform customers by the end of the year that technical fixes were needed to bring their diesel cars into line with EU limits on nitrogen oxide limits. Commission spokesman Christian Wigand says the carmaker also committed to have all cars repaired by spring next year, adding that Volkswagen would offer clients “proof of conformity.” “Volkswagen committed to an EU-wide action plan today, which is an important step towards a fair treatment of consumers,” Jourova said in a statement. She added that she “will closely monitor this commitment and continue to work with consumer organizations, authorities and Volkswagen.” An EU official said after the meeting with Sanz that it wasn’t the Commission’s role to impose fines or order compensation, adding that it was a matter for national courts and enforcement authorities to decide on a case-by-case basis.
