Video on VW remedy

The Volkswagen Group says it will take less than an hour to bring its 1.6 and two-litre turbo-diesel engines in Europe into line with emissions rules. The company, which has released a video on the remedy, has pledged to fix 11 million vehicles worldwide with defeat devices that cheat on emissions tests for nitrogen oxide. It says the two-litre EA189 will require only a software update taking about 30 minutes to install. The 1.6-liter powerplant will be fitted with a grid to improve its efficiency – remedy that will take less than an hour. The measures only cover Volkswagen-branded models in Europe and should be completed by the end of next year. A proposal for the 1.2-litre models will follow. The solution announced involved says technicians fitting a flow transformer onto the mass air sensor housing assembly by placing plastic tube outfitted with a grate over the sensor that regulates the fuel injection system. It measures how much air goes through the intake manifold and adjusts the amount of fuel being injected into the cylinders accordingly. The transformer stabilises the airflow before it hits the sensor, which results in more accurate readings.
