UK work hits high

Posted on 24 September, 2016

UK car production hit a 14-year high in August, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The BBC reports that 109,004 vehicles rolled off the production line in the UK, up 9.1 per cent from August last year. SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes says the figures are “good news for car makers and welcome news for the UK economy.” “[The UK] depends on this thriving sector for an increasing share of UK exports,” he adds. The 14-year high follows rising demand in the UK and overseas after increased investment in UK car plants. Demand from British consumers was up 6.2 per cent, while export volumes rose by 10.2 per cent. In total, 1.1 million vehicles have made in Britain this year, a 12 per cent increase on last year. Hawes says: “British car producers are exporting a diverse range of high quality, attractive new models that are in demand across the world.” He adds that future success for the industry depends on “continued investment in plants and products.” “That in turn depends on the UK maintaining internationally competitive business and trading conditions.” A number of surveys and data have suggested that the UK’s decision to leave the European Union has had little impact on manufacturing so far, but a spokesperson for the SMMT says it is “too early to tell” whether Brexit was affecting the car industry.
