TT scoops award

The new Audi TT has been crowned innovation of the year at the Automotive Brand Contest. The marque also scooped the “best of best” gong for its Matrix LED headlight technology. The headlights rely on multiple individually controlled LEDs that enable high-precision lighting of the high beam. By switching on or off the individual LEDs, the Matrix headlights can split the high beam to point in multiple directions or block part of the single beam. Managed by a responsive control unit, they are activated and deactivated or dimmed according to situations, such as when approaching a car, pulling up behind another driver or pointing to a pedestrian by the side of the road. Meanwhile, the marque unveiled the Audi TT Roadster and TTS Roadster at the Paris Motor Show. These are set to come standard with the Matrix lighting system and a virtual cockpit display. Audi’s virtual cockpit places a 12.3-inch screen behind the steering wheel where standard instrumentation usually sits. In addition to displaying information about speed and revs, the system can display navigation and media information, and car settings. Tied in with the car’s virtual cockpit is an optional 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen system. It uses a microphone to analyse potentially intrusive sounds and tailors speaker output to compensate. The system is coupled with Audi’s Symphoria software. This separates different elements of each piece of audio before distributing them among the speakers to create a “wider and deeper” sound.
