Posted on 21 November, 2016

New Zealanders will be able to order Tesla vehicles as soon as November. According to the electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla is now accepting online orders for Model S and Model X vehicles, with the first vehicles expected to arrive some time between April and June 2017. The first NZ Tesla store and service centre will be situated in Auckland and superchargers are being planned for Auckland to Wellington next year. The Model S product line includes the quickest production car, the P100D, with a 0-100 kmh time of 2.7 seconds when in one of the car's driving modes called "ludicrous", along with a range of up to 613 kilometres. Tesla also plans to make its latest home battery storage unit available in New Zealand. The unit, called the Powerwall 2, will allow "home owners to store solar energy during the day, so they can use it during peak hours in the evening or during a power outage". Tesla released a statement saying "Over 80 per cent of New Zealand's electricity is generated by renewables, so, it's a natural progression for Tesla to deliver energy storage solutions to local residents. Powerwall will empower homeowners to store energy during off peak times, support electricity networks and achieve greater grid autonomy." The Model S accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (96 kmph) in as little as 2.5 seconds. The Model S comes with Autopilot capabilities. The Model X includes side impact intrusions and without a gasoline engine, the large front trunk acts as a giant impact-absorbing crumple zone. It features all-wheel drive capabilities, towing, and five, six, and seven seat configurations. New Zealand pricing for these models, that sell for about $110,000 in Australia, is yet to be announced.
