Start-up backs virtual strategy

With more than 50 per cent of its 200 staff working in the field, Hyundai has embraced company-wide virtualisation. It has implemented a Nutanix virtual computing platform to support its VMware virtual desktop interface (VDI) environment as it continues to focus on increasing staff productivity, accelerating workflow and reducing costs. “Our IT strategy is based on a ‘virtual first’ rule,” says Bala Kothandaraman, general manager of ICT at Hyundai Motor Company Australia. ‘’We have two in-house applications that are integral to our processes – the purchase-order system and invoicing – but getting sign-off on individual requests was taking up to 10 days with many people out of the office on a regular basis.” Wayne Neich, Nutanix’s managing director, says many companies are moving to VDI as they look to accommodate mobile workers and those working from home. “Irrespective of where they’re being used, applications still have to perform at the right level,” he says. “Mobile workers should have the same experience whether they’re using a smartphone in a car, a notebook computer from home or an office computer.”
