Sedan shines safety light

Posted on 16 October, 2014

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury sedan is entering the market with superior occupant and pedestrian protection, and a five-star safety rating, after the new entrant to the large car category scored highly in all assessment areas. ANCAP chairman Lauchlan McIntosh says the marque’s “flagship model offers a high level of physical crashworthiness and excellent safety features as standard.” He adds: “This is one of the first times we’ve seen ‘standard’ against almost all safety features on our checklist. Importantly, autonomous emergency braking is one of these standard features and one recently left off many new models hitting our shores.” Many safety-assist technologies (SATs) are standard on all variants of the Genesis in Australia and New Zealand. They include an active lift – or pop-up – bonnet, emergency-stop signal, adaptive cruise control, lane support, adaptive front lighting, pre-safe systems and reversing collision avoidance. The models also boast daytime running lights and tyre-pressure monitoring. “Historically, consumers have been encouraged to seek out features, such as ABS and electronic stability control, but with manufacturers developing and rolling out SATs rapidly, they will soon be just as familiar with – and demand – these important technologies,” says McIntosh. “Active safety systems are the future. ANCAP is encouraging consumers to learn more about the benefits of these systems and ask for them when they buy.”
