One-of-a-kind 1934 Bugatti sold

Posted on 02 June, 2017

A one-off 1934 Bugatti Type 57 Gangloff Roadster has found a permanent home in New Zealand, Waimak Classic Cars has said. The Bugatti Type 57 contained a revolutionary chassis, suspension and engine. The 1934 Roadster was the first manufactured by coach-builder Gangloff. Only one model was produced that year, costing 98,526 Francs. During its time in France, the Bugatti was owned by an two high-profile businessmen and an Austrian aristocrat. The car was imported to New Zealand in 1956, and two years later, mechanic Bob Turnbull purchased the Type 57 and took it back with him to the Central Otago township of Ophir, where it remained. Following Turnbull’s death in 2012, the Type 57 was restored to its original colours – pearl with a burgundy trim and carpet in 2015. The car went on sale following its restoration in October 2015, with a price-tag of $4 million, according to The New Zealand Herald. Rangiora-based Waimak Classic Cars managed the sale on behalf of the Bob Turnbull Trust. It’s not known what the Type 57 Bugatti eventually sold for. Auckland businessman Steve Lockwood has bought the vehicle, and has agreed to offer it to various car museums around New Zealand for display. “New Zealand is a young country, it is a responsibility we all have to preserve our own history for our future generations,” he said.
