Nissan optimistic for year ahead

Nissan is predicting a 5.5 per cent increase in operating profit for the financial year ending March 2025 as it banks on rising global sales, particularly in North America.

The Japanese carmaker has reported an operating profit of ¥568.7 billion (NZ$6.1b) for the April 2023 to March 2024 period but predicts that will jump to ¥600b for the next full year.

It expects vehicle sales to rise 7.5 per cent from 3.4 million to 3.7m over the same timeframe, reports Reuters.

Nissan says it anticipates a 13.3 per cent rise in North American sales to 1.4m units but only a 0.8 per cent increase in China, where sales slumped 24 per cent in the last financial year to just below 800,000.

Makoto Uchida, chief executive officer, also detailed the company’s results for the three months ended March 31 during a press conference on May 9.

Operating profit for that spell came to ¥90.3b, up 3.3 per cent from ¥87.4b in the same period a year ago.

Uchida, pictured, says Nissan aims to achieve sustainable, profitable growth while providing high value to customers. However, he warns that it expects to continue to face intense competition and inflationary pressure over the coming year.
