New class for cars

Posted on 05 October, 2015

The newly-formed NZ Touring Cars class is preparing for the Ssangyong Super Racing Weekend in Taupo. The new class is a combination of the V8 SuperTourers (V8ST), the NZV8 TLX and NZV8L. The NZ Touring Cars will have two classes racing on the same grid. Class one will feature V8ST and NZV8 cars, while class two would be for older NZV8 TL cars. Category manager Gary Lathrope says: “It’s no secret top-tier motorsport has had some struggles in recent years. However, we are confident that by uniting the three categories it will provide not only better racing for the competitors but better racing for the fans.” The new category structure also means that there were two trophies and will now be one, according to Lathrope. “The car and driver who accumulates the most points in class one will win the overall NZ Touring Car Championship and the NZ Touring Car Cup. Those who accumulate the most points in class two will be awarded a NZ Touring Car Championship Class 2 Cup. It’s a great way to show recognition to the champions in both classes.” The category is expecting more than 20 cars for round one. Entrants include current NZV8 champion and former Bathurst 1000 winner, Jason Bargwanna, and current V8ST champion Simon Evans. Returning TL champion, Kevin Williams, will be competing in class two. A full list of entries for both classes would be announced before the event. The Ssangyong Super Racing Weekend is on at Taupo from October 17-18.
