New chief at Fiat Chrysler

David Smitherman has been unveiled as chief operating officer of Fiat Chrysler New Zealand – the joint venture between Neville Crichton and Clyde Campbell. Since the company started trading in May 2013, Campbell has been in charge of daily operations from the headquarters located in Auckland. He and Crichton will stay actively involved in the operations, but Smitherman’s appointment will allow them to concentrate on developing business opportunities. The 37-year-old comes to the role with a significant and successful automotive background. He was most recently commercial manager for the Australia and New Zealand-based Ateco Group. “I’m looking forward to capitalising on the excellent results of Fiat Chrysler NZ’s first trading year,” says Smitherman, who will be relocating from Sydney to Auckland with his wife and four children. “We’re in a good position with exciting product and network developments in the pipeline.” “To continue the growth trajectory FCNZ is on and capitalise on emerging opportunities, Clyde will shift his focus to new business development,” say Crichton and Campbell in an announcement to dealer partners. “Most of you know David from his instrumental role in establishing FCNZ and through his work for the Ateco Group. We will remain actively involved in the business. However, David’s appointment will enable us to further grow the business in the immediate future.”
