New car terminal for Melbourne

Posted on 03 July, 2014

The Port of Melbourne Corporation has chosen Melbourne International Ro-Ro Automotive Terminal (MIRRAT) – a subsidiary of Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) – to build a new automotive and roll-on, roll-off terminal. A world-class facility at Webb Dock West will benefit the city, and support stronger trade through the port for the vehicle and ro-ro industries. Construction will take place in two phases starting in late 2014. Once operational, it will have the capacity to handle up to one million units per year. Phase one includes a 185,000m2 facility north of the current car terminal due to be completed by early 2016. Phase two will incorporate the existing vehicle terminal at the south end of Webb Dock West from January 1, 2018. When completed, the facility will have a berth length of 920 metres. It will also include a 8,000 m2 weather-proof cargo storage area, a maintenance area and truck parking facilities. “We’re delighted for MIRRAT to be afforded this opportunity and look forward to developing a terminal all stakeholders – the port, vessel operators, car and equipment importers and the community – can take pride in,” says Christopher J Connor, president of WWL. “MIRRAT will be an innovative terminal Australia can be proud of,” adds Rob Lord, head of Oceania. “It will focus on modern design and strong environmental performance.”
