More marques issue recalls

Mazda, Mitsubishi and Fuji Heavy Industries are now recalling about 710,000 more cars equipped with airbag inflators made by parts supplier Takata. The call-backs follow similar moves by other Japanese car makers to replace Takata’s inflators. About a dozen marques have so far called back more than 50 million vehicles worldwide since 2008 for these parts in what has become the biggest automotive recall on record. That figure includes the Japanese parts supplier’s last week to double its US recall to nearly 34m vehicles for investigative purposes. The cause of the defect for the expanded recalls is still unknown. Mazda is recalling about 112,000 vehicles in Japan, including the Atenza sedan, Bongo van, and two models it builds for Nissan and Mitsubishi. Fuji Heavy, which makes Subarus, is recalling 91,000 Imprezas in the country. Both companies are still working out plans for any recalls overseas. Mitsubishi says it is calling back about 100,000 units in Japan and 412,000 overseas
