The next step up, the 63 4MATIC+, contains a boosted 4.0-litre V8 Biturbo engine with cylinder deactivation, and generates 450kW of power and 900Nm of torque. Mercedes have also included the most powerful diesel car in the company’s history in the S-Class line-up. The S 350 d 4MATIC six-cylinder engine generates 210kW of power and 600Nm of torque, and the next-generation S 400d 4MATIC variation 250kW and 700Nm. The new engine consumes seven per cent less fuel while maintaining the extra power thanks to a new two-stage turbocharging and CAMTRONIC variable valve-lift control. As well as four new engine options, Mercedes have included a plug-in hybrid model variant an increased battery capacity of 13.3 kWh and a 50km electric range. An on-board 7.2kW charger allows for fast charging of the battery. The S-Class also comes with a range of new safety features and an upgrade of existing systems. The DISTRONIC active proximity assist now uses significantly more map and navigation data and supports the driver based on the route. Active steer assist, lane-change assist and emergency stop assist have also been upgraded. The S-Class is set to hit showrooms from July, with a New Zealand launch date pending.
