Sharing times past

Holden lovers from around New Zealand have shared their stories about the marque as it celebrates 60 years on these shores. And one lucky Holden fan will win a fully restored 1969 Monaro GTS for sharing their story. These are some of the highlights.

THE RESTORATION

Mark Grey

Mark Grey’s love for Holden started when he was a child and he has memories of a six-metre caravan hooked onto the back of his dad’s HG Holden station wagon. He was a founding member of the Early Holden Club in the 1980s and has owned eight Holdens over the years. He spent eight years restoring an FX ute. “My family bought me a dust cover for my ute, but it never goes on it because I like coming out to the shed and just looking at it.”

Russel Gutshlag

Russell Gutschlag, of Wanaka, wouldn’t trade his HR station wagon for any car except an original Monaro GTS. He bought his 1967 Holden in 1982 and drives it daily. Each fortnight he makes the journey to Twizel revelling in the car’s ability to navigate the ice and snow and deliver him there safely. “In the older models, you can cook a frozen pie inside the bonnet. Just do a bit of driving first and 10 minutes later it’s ready. You can’t do that with a modern car.”

Bharat Mistry

Bharat Mistry’s 1973 Kingswood has been in the family for three generations. Originally, it was owned by his great grandfather. His father bought it from him when he was 18. His grandfather’s requirement before he could allow him to purchase it was that nothing could be changed in the vehicle. It’s still in its original condition. “During 33 years of adoration, I have never wavered on my promise, this Holden is in immaculate original condition. One day soon my son will continue the family history.”
