Jaguar F-PACE wins 2017 World Car of the Year

The World Car Awards for 2017 were announced at the New York International Auto Show last night, with the Jaguar F-PACE taking out the top honour, beating out the Audi Q5 and the Volkswagen Tiguan. A panel of six design experts were tasked with awarding the honour, which aims to “highlight new vehicles with innovation and style that push established boundaries.”  “The F-PACE is our first ever SUV, but it is clearly recognisable as a Jaguar and for it to win the 2017 World Car Design of the Year trophy vindicates our decision to bring our unique design principles and dynamic qualities to a new sector of the market,” said Jaguar’s director of design, Ian Callum. The Porsche Boxter Cayman won the World Performance Car award, the fifth title for the car maker following 2014, 2013, 2012 and 2006. Porsche North America CEO Klaus Zellmer was “honoured” at the selection. The World Luxury Car award went to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class over the BME 5 Series and Volvo S90. It’s the third Luxury Car win for Mercedez-Benz, after back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015. The Toyota Prius Prime was declared the World Green Car in New York for the second year in a row. "It is a great honor to have both the Prius Prime and C-HR nominated for World Car of the Year awards,” said vice-president and general manager for Toyota, Jack Hollis. The inaugural winner of the World Urban Car was the BMW i3 EV hatch, making it the first year that two electric cars have won awards. The new category recognises the growing need for portable, efficient vehicles for busy city streets. “Parts of the world will have to become smaller if road and parking space is to be found for them in increasingly packed towns and cities whose populations are swelling annually,” said World Car vice-chairman Mike Rutherford.
