Levies issues expanded

A botch-up that has seen thousands of car owners overcharged for their registration is bigger than first thought and still growing, according to the Labour Party. In June, a fault in ACC’s safety rating system revealed about 9,000 drivers were owed refunds of up to $103 after several models of cars were given incorrect ratings under the new safety-ratings system. But Sue Moroney, Labour’s ACC spokeswoman, has told Radio New Zealand that figure has now jumped tenfold. “I’ve had information from ACC that their estimation is that 90,000 vehicles have already been reclassified as a result of the botch-ups," she said, adding that number would probably grow. In a statement, she said the $3 million spent on the “flawed, confused and unfair” system could have been passed on as levy reductions instead. Nikki Kaye, Minister for ACC, told Radio NZ, she thought it was unlikely many more models would show up on the list, but admitted the system had “teething problems”.
