Hyundai teams with Google

Posted on 18 August, 2016

Hyundai is in discussions with Google about future partnerships, as the carmaker seeks external expertise to remain competitive, Automotive News reports. Hyundai Motor president Jeong Jin Haeng said after a meeting between the trade ministry and local automakers that Hyundai and Google have common areas that may require cooperation. Jeong didn’t give further details or confirm whether the carmaker is considering developing self-driving cars with the tech giant. But Hyundai has been among the most active marques in adopting Apple’s CarPlay and Google parent Alphabet’s Android Auto into its cars. The company is now looking towards collaborations with technology upstarts and Silicon Valley giants to stay relevant in the connected car and autonomous technology market. Ko Tae Bong, a senior auto analyst at Hi Investment & Securities Co., says Hyundai is lagging behind its competitors in developing autonomous vehicles. “It's not a choice but a critical prerequisite for Hyundai to cooperate with IT companies, such as Google, to survive in the near future."
