Fusion tops 600 miles

Posted on 25 May, 2016

Ford’s new 2017 Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid will be able to travel 610 miles (982km) on one tank of fuel and a battery. This boost in driving range is up 60 miles from the 2016 model, setting new distance standards. The first 22 miles are powered by battery and another 588 on gasoline. It has a 14-gallon fuel tank, with a combined city/highway EPA fuel-economy rating of 42 miles per gallon and a top speed of 85mph (136.7km/h). Ford has used a lighter motor oil, producing less friction in the engine, with additional changes to the powertrain software and regenerative braking. Basically, when the driver steps on the brake pedal, more energy goes back into the batteries. The plug-in hybrid uses electric batteries and gas-powered engines. With the Fusion Energi, the vehicle runs on all-electric mode for around 21 miles. If gas is in the tank, it works for one mile using both battery and gas - then the gas engine does the rest. Current competition for the Fusion Energi is the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Malibu hybrid – but the market is sure to become very cluttered.
