Global recall for Fiat

Posted on 24 May, 2016

Fiat Chrysler will recall almost 600,000 Fiat 500 models and Jeep Wrangler SUVs worldwide. The recall is happening in two parts and will see 80,474 Fiat 500 subcompact cars, produced between 2012 and 2016 with manual transmissions, called back to fix the clutch release system. Fiat says an investigation found that clutch travel could “exceed design parameters”, potentially restricting gear shifts and propulsion. Only 0.01 per cent of the recalled cars were expected to be affected by the fault. Of the recalled cars, 39,217 cars are in the US, 7,834 are in Canada, 7,155 are in Mexico, with the remaining 26,268 models elsewhere. In the second stage of recalls, 506,420 Wranglers will be called back to inspect the clockspring - a part in the steering wheel that aids airbag deployment. Fiat says that dust and dirt from off-road driving can “compromise the clockspring and eventually prevent driver-side airbag deployment in a crash”. The airbag warning lamp would be activated in models with compromised clocksprings, and Fiat says owners should notify dealerships if this was the case. In the US, 392,464 models produced between 2007-2010 will be recalled, along with 7,435 models from 2011-2016, with right-hand drive for special duty. Of the remaining models, 35,412 are in Canada, 8,529 are in Mexico and 62,580 are elsewhere. There have been no reports of injuries or accidents related to either recall.
