Electric cars focus of Paris show

Posted on 26 September, 2016

‘Dirty’ diesel is out and energy-efficient electricity is in at the biennial Paris Motor Show, which runs until 16 October.

This is a big change for the prestigious show, which used to celebrate the power, and economy of diesel engines — the dominant car type in Europe, according to the New York Times. Diesel engines have been marred over the last two years by the Volkswagen emissions cheating scandal and revelations of lax European emissions regulations. This year, carmakers at the Paris show will be highlighting their diesel alternatives including petrol cars, all electric cars and hybrids. Highlights include an all-electric sports car made by Mercedes-Benz, the first of four new electric vehicles the German manufacturer plans to make by 2020. Mitsubishi is introducing a range of petrol-electric hybrids and all-electric vehicles. Toyota’s new Prius models, with improved electric operation, are being showcased. Nissan is demonstrating a new 2L, four-cylinder petrol engine, described as providing “V6 power and diesel-calibre fuel economy”, according to the New York Times. Volkswagen is also introducing new electric vehicle technologies at the show. Innovation in battery-power and hybrids will also be a highlight of the show, according to CarsGuide. BMW is showcasing a revised i3 electric car, which has an upgraded battery that can be retrofitted to existing vehicles. The battery allows a 200km driving range, according to the carmaker. Citroen’s Cxperience Concept includes a 200kW hybrid in a futuristic sedan. The Paris Motor Show, officially known as the Mondial de l’Automobile, has run since 1898.
