Dodge unveils its fastest car

Posted on 18 April, 2017

American car maker Dodge has unveiled what they claim is the fastest most powerful production car ever at the New York International Auto Show last week. The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon features a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 engine, which generates 626kW of power. 25 components of the previous Hellcat engine have been upgraded, including pistons, rods, valve train and fuel injection system. The supercharger has also been increased to 2.7 litres. 0-100km/h takes just 2.3 seconds, making it the fastest production car in existence, ahead of the Tesla Model S P100D, which takes 2.5 seconds. Dodge also claims it’s the fastest quarter-mile car, taking 9.65 seconds and reaching 225km/h. The Demon is the first production car to contain a Power Chiller, which regulates intake air temperature by diverting air-conditioning refrigerant to a chiller unit mounted by a low-temperature circuit coolant pump. The chilled coolant flows to heat exchangers in the supercharger and provides cooler air to the engine. An after-run cooling system keeps the engine cooling fan and pump running when the engine has shut down, to enable the vehicle to reach optimum drag temperature more quickly. The Challenger SRT Demon is set to arrive in US dealerships in spring, and Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis told reporters in New York the car would cost “well under six figures.” It’s not yet known when, or if, the vehicle will launch in New Zealand.
