Citroën debuts first SUV

Posted on 19 April, 2017

Citroën have debuted the C5 Aircross at this year’s Auto Shanghai, following an initial concept presented at the Geneva Auto Show last month. “This marks the first complete Citroën SUV... coinciding with the first ever Citroën model to be launched as a PHEV plug-in hybrid vehicle with full electric mode,” said Citroën New Zealand division manager Simon Rose. With SUVs accounting for a quarter of global vehicle sales, car makers are scrambling to fill demand. Citroën is one the latest manufacturers to step outside its niche and offer a utility vehicle, which will be available in China this October. A range of petrol engines will be on offer, and power outputs will range from 123kW to 149kW. Citroën’s plug-in hybrid option will be the most powerful production vehicle ever, with a 149kW engine paired to two electric motors, to generate a combined 224kW. Suspension has been improved with new “Progressive Hydraulic Cushions,” which compress and rebound when traversing rough terrain. A 2.73 wheelbase and high ground clearance also allows for some off-road capability. A range of driving aids have been included with the C5 Aircross, including active safety brake, active lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control with a stop, grip control and hill assist descent control. Following its China launch this October, the Aircross is set to hit European dealers in the second half of 2018. A launch date for New Zealand has yet to be announced.
