The government is taking into account a broad spectrum of issues when considering the safety of New Zealand’s fleet in addition to its age. The Ministry of Transport (MoT) says vehicles have become safer and emit less pollution thanks to standards improving. The MoT also says it has never proposed using age – in itself – “to control the entry of vehicles or their operation on our roads”. It says this was made clear in a cabinet paper in 2012 on the vehicle exhaust emissions rule. The automotive and other industries are being urged to follow changes to the Fair Trading Act, which came into force on March 17.
